As a little girl I asked my mother, “How did I get my birthmark?”

She said, “Because I went out of the house when there was an eclipse of the moon”

Birthmarks are any sort of mark on the skin that is present at birth. So, it can be a dark-pigmented area, a pinkish mark, yellow streaks, green Mr Blobby spots.. anything!

Birthmarks become significant if as the child grows, it changes in appearance, increase in number (eg: in neurofibromatosis, spots are known as cafe au lait spots) or doesn’t disappear if it was meant to disappear eg: strawberry naevus.
