Reiter’s syndrome is a triad of symptoms when you can’t SEE, can’t PEE and have pains in the KNEE. Classically, a person presenting to you in a genitourinary clinic with conjunctivitis, urethritis and arthritis. It can be caused by organisms like Chlamydia trachomatis and also GI organisms like Shigella and Salmonella.
Who is Reiter?
He was a German military doctor. He first discovered this illness in soldiers who were having unsafe sex during World War I. However, due to his infamous contribution in WW2 by conducting experiments on ‘volunteers’ in the concentration camp… there is a campaign done by a group of doctors to phase out / abandon the term ‘Reiter’s’ and replace it with ‘sexually acquired reactive arthritis ‘ instead.
