There are several reasons as to why a hysterectomy has to be done. Cepat namakan. 😛 Common reasons I’ve seen so far in theatres are heavy bleeding and endometriosis. It can be done in 2 ways. Through the vagina or an abdominal incision. I haven’t seen how it’s done through a vagina before and i simply cannot imagine how the uterus is pulled down into the vagina to be excised. It’s just…. weird. However, you get less hospital stay and quicker recovery rate with that procedure. (I think)
Older women are often given the option to take their ovaries out as well considering that the ovaries wouldn’t have much use in a near menopausal/post menopausal woman. Furthermore, this decreases the risk of them getting ovarian cancer. You cannot have cancer in an organ you don’t have, right?
A hysterectomy is a major operation. Patients have to stay in hospitals from 5 -7 days. We must understand that some women get terribly upset over it as it symbolizes a loss of feminity/ motherhood to the woman. Some have come to terms as they know that this is the only option they’re left with having tried other medical treatments. 😦
Ever wondered how a uterus looks like? You may have heard people saying it’s the size of an orange. Having observed several total hysterectomies (where they take the uterus+cervix out), I think it closely resembles the chicken drumstick. Apologies to all drumstick lovers. Ampun.. Only smaller. Total height (uterus+cervix) may be up to 3 inches.
Now, ever wonder how a vagina looks like? That’ll be another post if jetjetsemot’s not telling.
