:: I cannot live without books.. August 7, 2007

” I cannot live without books ” were the exact words of Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd president of the United States.

Well sir, so do I. Now is a good time for me to catch up on my reading of fiction books. It is a good prescription to encourage imagination, culture curiosity and cheap mind vacation – you could ‘travel’ to almost everywhere with a book. You could even go back in time.

The world is a book, and those who do not travel, read only a page – St. Augustine

The world’s only as big as what you know – Andrew Hopkins in Vanishing Acts.

At the moment, I am struggling to finish a book called Little Face by Sophie Hannah. The synopsis and review sounded exciting but having read the first few chapters, I was like BORED to death. I’m still reading it with the hope that the pace would pick up and something interesting would crop up. Perhaps it’s the style of writing. It gives me a headache. But that’s just my opinion. Who knows you might find it interesting.

my dream room – a personal little library

I’ve managed to finish other books though.

  • False Impression by Jeffrey Archer (Superb)

  • Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom (Different but okay)

  • Vanishing Acts by Jodi Picoult (Not as good as My Sister’s Keeper but I still cried)

The other books in line, waiting to be read are;

  • The House of Gods by Samuel Shem (said to be a must read for medical students and only those with a sense of humour would enjoy; claims to have everything you need to know about medicine. It’s fiction by the way)

  • Teacher Man by Frank McCourt (borrowed off Jet)

  • The Harmony Silk Factory by Tash Aw ( I think I’ll start with this and ditch Little Face)

  • Marker by Robin Cook (another physician who writes for a living)

I am also keen on getting my hands on the Harry Potter books starting from The Philosopher’s Stones to the latest Deathly Hallows having read the very interesting bits and pieces on Severus Snape. Huwaaa… I want, I want.

So, have you come across any interesting books so far?

I am a reader ( not RIDER ) but I rarely rare ( menunjukkan kesangat jarangan ) ends up reading English novels.

Why?

As a leader, I would quote Arnold Schwarzennegger in The Simpson Movie:
” I was chosen to LEAD, not to READ”. Hahahah… make sense kan?

If u are into medical thrillers, u should try Tess Gerritsen’s books. I can assure you that they are all page-turner.

Cuba baca Vanish..her latest thriller. best banget!!!

You know, if not a doctor, i would love to become one of the assistants for Grissom in CSI. for Grissom ok? bukan orang lain..~winkwink~

i’m currently reading The Intepretation of Murder. don’t worry, although i like to read this kind of books, i still don’t know how to handle a gun. mok ambik darah patients pun bergegar.. ~lalala~

9. K.Shila - August 8, 2007

Min,
I’m reading “Thousands splendid suns” 2nd book written by Khaled Hosseini, the author of the big hit “Kite Runner”.
I loved Kite Runner, it brought me on a horrible emotional roller coaster ride. I thought I was being a big baby (my whole body shook when I cried reading it) so I passed it to my 23 y.o brother as an experiment. He does read, but mainly light stuffs (reader’s digest, Nat Geo, etc). But he couldn’t put Kit Runner down and he wept like a girl!!! Go read Kite Runner if youhaven’t got the chance yet.

23. Adam - August 9, 2007

I’ve been trying to get my hands on “The House of God” for months now!!! It’s a hot item at our medical library and it’s been sold out at all of the bookstores I’ve been to here! Argh… I just hope I’m not disappointed when I finally do read it!

24. Minci - August 9, 2007

Adam,
Try amazon. They’re never a let-down.

25. Adam - August 9, 2007

The problem with Amazon is that they take ages to deliver to Australia! My roommate had to wait over a month for CD’s that he bought through there. Maybe it’s a good thing that I don’t have it in my hands right now because I’d be even more distracted!

26. Zy - August 14, 2007

27. Minci - August 14, 2007

28. Dutch Smith - July 25, 2008

Hello,
“Spirit of the Place” is definitely a great read.
It’s considered Mr. Shem’s most ambitious work.
Anyone interested should visit http://www.samuelshem.com for more information.
