Royal Mail is on strike again. This time for a longer period of time . Thus, meaning 3 things;

  1. I wouldn’t get the books I ordered from Amazon until end of next week. I’m waiting for 3 books – Catch 22, Life of Pi and The Kite Runner.

  2. My steady flow of DVDs I rented from LoveFilm is interrupted.

  3. Jet would receive her ‘parcel kasih sayang’ late.

If I’m not mistaken, The Kite Runner will be made into a movie. It is part of Jeff Skoll’s effort in achieving Humanity 2.0. (Watch : Making Movies That Make Change)

I have just finished reading The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. I bought the adult edition and thought it to be a remarkable book. It should be on the reading list for students doing their PaêdΑtric rotations. It’s not proper medical textbook but definitely a useful fiction, as it provides an insight into how a child with Asperger’s Syndrome thinks and behaves. (I thought he had a touch of autism but I may be wrong – Can  he have both?)

Source : Powells.Com
Narrated by a fifteen-year-old autistic savant obsessed with Sherlock Holmes, this dazzling novel weaves together an old-fashioned mystery, a contemporary coming-of-age story, and a fascinating excursion into a mind incapable of processing emotions.

Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capital cities and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions, and cannot stand to be touched. Gifted with a superbly logical brain, Christopher is autistic. Everyday interactions and admonishments have little meaning for him. “I do not always do what I’m told,” he admits. “And this is because when people tell you what to do it is usually confusing and does not make sense. For example, people often say ‘Be quiet’ but they don’t tell you how long to be quiet for…”

At fifteen, Christopher’s carefully constructed world falls apart when he finds his neighbor’s dog, Wellington, impaled on a garden fork and is initially blamed for the killing. Christopher decides that he will track down the real killer and turns to his favorite fictional character, the impeccably logical Sherlock Holmes, for inspiration. But the investigation leads him down some unexpected paths and ultimately brings him face to face with the dissolution of his parents’ marriage. As Christopher tries to deal with this crisis within his own family, the narrative draws readers into the mysterious workings of Christopher’s mind.

At once deeply funny and heartbreakingly poignant, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is one of the freshest debuts in years.

Tha language is ‘light’ and the story is to my taste. A definite page turner. Nak baca? Pinjamlah..

Cakapaje,
Cansored? susah lah nk baca buku camtuh. I wonder based on what? anyway this book doesnt have any sex scenes involved, probably just the foul language. Catch 22? Hm.. no idea.. just that Coops once recommended it.

Nad,
come to thin of it, i think Asperger’s is very much like autism. the main difference (as taught) is the existence of behavioural problem. Ohh.. I’ve read Vanishing Act! Dia kna..cerita tuh kan.. 😈 Tapi yg lain tk baca lagi. 🙂

5. cakapaje - October 5, 2007

Well, I mentioned censorship based on you describing it as adult version, that’s all.
