Jessica Alba has got to be one of the prettiest Iban I’ve ever seen. In the movie Sleeping Dictionary that is. The movie’s sound quality was so bad (padan..tgk lanun punya) that I had to fast forward most scenes. I couldnt help wondering if ‘sleeping dictionaries’ did exist in Sarawak.

Sleeping dictionary is a term given to indigenous women of Sarawak (in this case, the Ibans) who lives with the foreign officers on administrative duties in Sarawak – performing wifely duties and teaching the local language.

According to Wikipedia, the practice existed. Hence, the  “many prominent Eurasians in local Borneo society who are living proof of that”. I have yet to find a more reliable resource. Tak nampak pun.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the movie; it was funny as it was moving. What I liked about the movie most was that it shot on location without much fanfare thus watching it, I was caught by surprise.

Can’t say about the Iban; but in truth, the Sleeping Dictionary exist in many societies including the Malay of the Peninsular, only the extent may vary from one place to another – some may have been forced, while some not. I may be wrong, but I would think the real reason behind such ‘affairs’ would be more sexual than not. Later, it led to other matters convenient which seem to suit everybody…well, almost.

But as you implied, the ‘effects’ or proof that such ‘affairs’ existed may be akin to searching for the Nessie or Bigfoot, or mysteries on similar scale. However, do take in consideration that this custom or courtesy was not afforded to the gwailos only, as invading forces may partake on such matter to their whims and fancy.

Minci,
I watched the movie quit sometime now. I have a copy of it as well. Of course the best part will be the ” susu” part. Hahaha.

If it were for real, I would be glad to migrate to the Borneo and live happily ever after.
